Message from outgoing President Lew Manges
Many of you will be surprised to hear that Pennsylvania has by far the largest number of individual and organizational members in USPRA than any other state chapter. Furthermore, we have more Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners (CPRP) than any other state chapter.
It was only when I attended my first national meeting in Boise, Idaho, as a new USPRA board member that I realized how respected Pennsylvania is as a leader in Psychiatric Rehabilitation. So many people, including some well recognized leaders in the field, took time to tell me how impressed they are with what is going on in Pennsylvania.
When I reflect on our growth in the past few years, I too am astonished. Not only have we grown in membership and attendance at our annual conference but have had a significant impact on the development of psychiatric rehabilitation programs in Pennsylvania. Just in the past year many of our board members have participated in advisory committees and task forces to promote psychiatric rehabilitation and related services across the state. We now have a more balanced board with active members representing every region of Pennsylvania.
We think we had a significant influence in affecting important modifications in the draft regulations soon to be approved and applied throughout the State. We may not have gotten all the changes we hoped for but feel we can live with the new guidelines that reflect the principles of empowerment and recovery. We are told that if all goes as planned, the proposed PRS regulations should be in effect sometime next year.
We are proud of our collaborative efforts to promote the recognition of Certified Peer Specialists and congratulate the more than one thousand specialists across the state that have completed their training. We continue to encourage our organizational members to consider CPS as a rich and valued resource for psychiatric rehabilitation programs.
We initiated some collaborative efforts with drop-in centers across the State and, as with CPS’s, offer assistance in any way we can without imposing on their autonomy as a unique services.
We may be most proud of our internal advancements that will enhance our leadership role in Pennsylvania.
After taking the bold and necessary step of employing a paid executive director we have taken the next step by employing a highly qualified consultant to develop our training programs. The State has endorsed PAPSRS as a second vendor for the 12 hour orientation training in Psychiatric Rehabilitation. Expect to see more trainings offered by PAPSRS in the future, especially in areas where our members have expressed the greatest need. All of our trainings including the very popular CPRP prep classes offer approved CPRP credit hours. The board is currently considering several proposals which should significantly enhance our website and interactive possibilities. All these initiatives are designed to increase our influence and accessibility as psychiatric rehabilitation becomes an in-plan service in Pennsylvania.
Finally, as my term as chapter president comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the elected and Advisory Board members for their support and unbelievable commitment to further the PAPSRS vision in promoting psychiatric rehabilitation in Pennsylvania.
See you at the conference in April.

Help OVR to improve their services by providing feedback
Are YOU satisfied with the services YOU are receiving or have received from OVR? Were they better than you expected? OK, or not as good as you expected? Here is your chance to let OVR know how YOU feel about their services.
The OVR Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted by the PaRC, an independent citizen group authorized by the Federal Government, is available now for you to take at the PaRC website, www.parac.org.
A comment made on last year’s survey, by a person like YOU, helped OVR see a need for more training on autism disorders. So, find a computer here, at your home, a neighbor’s place, or the library, etc., and take the survey. You’ll be glad you were able to help OVR help other people, like YOU. Thanks Much!
